How to write a leter to the editor
by June Van Klaveren
More people read the Letters to the Editor section of the newspaper than any other section. It's one of the first pages elected officials turn to.
For small companies with limited budgets, letters to the editor of your local newspaper are a good way to get your name in print. . .that is, if you follow a few guidelines.
1) Choose a topic that compliments your business so you have a reason to put your company name under your name.
2) Get to the point. Be straightforward and make your main point early on in the letter.
3) Keep your letter to the editor 200-250 words. Shorter is better because the longer the letter, the less the chance of it being published.
4) Edit your letter carefully checking grammar and spelling.
5) If the issue is a controversial one, write the letter, leave it overnight and reread it again the next day. Allowing time between writing and actually sending the letter can force you to read the letter more objectively without emotion. If it sounds too emotional, revise it.
6) Include your address and daytime phone number.
7) Email or fax your letter if it is urgent.
8) Accentuate the positive. When you criticize, also propose a solution to the problem or a better alternative, if possible.
