Ads Don't Sell
by
June Van Klaveren
Contrary to what many company owners think, ads don't sell on their own. They simply bring in leads after which, it's up to you to turn these leads into sales. Some evening, with pen in hand, sit down with your local newspaper and do this exercise. Instead of reading the news, focus on the advertisements using these instructions.
- Start by putting a big "X" over all the ads that have the name of the company in the headline.
- Now search for ads that have no call to action. That's right, put a big "X" on them!
- Next read over the ads with a headline that makes no sense to you unless you read the entire ad. "X" them as well.
- Find ads that have no prominent contact information like a phone number, email address or website. "X" them!
- Look for ads that give you NO real information about the product or service. "X" marks that spot!
- Go back now and "X" out all ads do not inform you enough to make you want more information about the product or service.
- Looking at the ads that are unmarked, find the ad (there probably will be only one or two) that gives you enough information about the company, the owner, and the product to move you to actually make a phone call or visit a store. People want to buy things from people they know and trust. It's up to your ad to begin the process by providing INFORMATION, call to action and contact information.
- Clip out the ads you have not marked and use them for reference the next time you create an ad.
NOW, the selling is up to you!!
